UPCOMING ROAD CLOSURES
UPDATE – road closure and repair work at Thanet House, Chalford
It has been confirmed that work to repair the wall at Thanet House will start the week commencing 20th August.
It is anticipated the scheme will take approximately ten weeks to deliver and, for safety reasons, the road will have to remain closed for the duration of these works.
The scheme details remain the same as previously stated with the key elements including:
– stabilising the top section of wall so it does not pose a danger to people working below
– building a blockwork wall to contain the concrete as it is poured in stages to fill the hole
– carefully removing the debris from in front of the wall and rebuilding it
– Severn Trent’s own work restoring their water main through this section, which we hope they will be able to complete during the final stages of our wall repair work
Further information will be shared about when the road will be reopened to traffic once the other service providers involved have confirmed their work programmes.
Thank you for your patience. If you have any queries please phone Highways on 08000 514514.

Information, News and Events
HIGH STREET CLOSURE – IMPORTANT MESSAGE
There have been incidences of drivers ignoring the Road Closure signs at the entrance to the High Street in Chalford. Repairs to the High Street are on-going and County Highways have asked us to stress the importance of adherence to this closure and has made the following statement.
The Road closure “is in place for everyone’s safety and to allow for significant structural repairs under the carriageway. The passing of vehicles over this section of carriageway is therefore not permitted until the road closure has been lifted. It not only puts the general public at risk as well as the occupants of the vehicle, but also those working on the site. A diversion route is in place and this must be adhered to. The road is closed by legal order so the Police can prosecute offenders disregarding the road closure signs.”
Stroud District Council are undertaking a review of all Parish/Town Councils and Parish Meetings in the Stroud District. This survey is intended to collect local residents’ views about how well they think their Parish/Town Council or Parish Meeting works and any information that you provide in this Survey will be used for the purpose of this review. If you require information about the structure of Chalford Parish Council, please visit or contact the Parish Centre in Geralds Way (Tel. 887204).
CHALFORD VIADUCT – REPAIR WORK
Network Rail will be carrying out urgent repair work to Chalford Viaduct. The main construction works are scheduled to take place from 17 October 2018 until 8 February 2019. However, starting from 15 October 2018, they will be removing trees and bushes in a 5m strip at the face of the viaduct to make room for the scaffolding. Although most of the work will be carried out during the daytime, they will need to carry out some work at night.
IMPROVING CYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN ACCESS TO VALLEY VIA BLACKNESS
Old Neighbourhood, Toadsmoor and Dark Lane are challenging routes down to the valley for cyclists and pedestrians because of high levels of traffic, the winding nature of the roads and lack of pavements.
There is another route down from Brownshill via Blackness to the bottom of Toadsmoor road which has as traffic free section between the top of Churchill Road and the Monastery. This section is dark with an uneven surface so is unpleasant or impassable for walkers and cyclists but could be improved to make it a more attractive option for people to cycle or walk up and down the hill.
This would be of benefit to residents of Chalford Parish and, more widely, Bisley, Brimscombe and Thrupp and Minchinhampton. These parishes may also be interested in supporting this as part of a wider project to develop a safe cycling route from Chalford through to Stroud.
Highways have looked at the traffic free section and suggested that the following work could be done to improve the route.
• resurfacing the whole section
• adjusting some of the bollards
• environmental work to let more light in but without cutting down trees or removing the banks
The initial estimate for this work is £25,000 – £28,000 subject to any issues found when a site appraisal is carried out.
There are funds we could bid for to provide most of the money to do this but the Parish Council would need to contribute about £2,000. Other Parish Councils would also be approached for support.
We can only bid for funding if we can demonstrate support within the parish to do this. We would really appreciate it if you would fill in one a consultation form and send it back to us. Blackness consultation
If you would like to be kept informed about progress please include an email address or phone number. These will not be used for any other purpose.

PARISH COUNCIL MATTERS
PARISH COUNCIL ANNUAL NEWSLETTER
The annual newsletter was due to be delivered to all households in the parish in August/September. If you have not received a copy, we would be grateful if you could contact us at the Parish Centre to let us know.
Tel. 887204 or Email: email@example.com
FOOTPATH GROUP: Back to work after the summer break
The Footpath Volunteers are having a summer break, but as September progresses we’ll be getting to work again with our usual enthusiasm. We’ve some jobs lined up already, but if you know of footpaths that need brambles cutting back, encroaching grass and weeds clearing, or hedges that are making a path difficult to use, let us know.
Also, we’re always pleased to take on new Volunteers, so if you’d like to contribute to footpath maintenance, again let us know. The tasks vary from gentle to demanding, and Volunteers can come as often or seldom as they wish. We’ve settled into two hour sessions on Thursday mornings.
The Parish Office can be contacted on 01453 887204.
BOULES COURT – CONSULTATION
Residents approached us asking if they could have a Boules Court. This was agreed and we will be installing a Boules court in Bussage Pleasure Ground. This should be in place in the next couple of months. We will be keeping the court in good order but will not be providing equipment, players will need to provide their own sets.
NEW SPEED SIGN
The Parish Council road safety group has had funding recently from the Gloucestershire Police and Crime Commissioner for a speed sign which will be moved to various locations around the parish gathering valuable data to help us make our roads safer.
The sign also displays the speed cars are travelling at and hopefully will make those driving too fast slow down.
During the first week, when the sign was on the stretch of Middle Hill from Fourways towards Burcombe Road speeds of over 6000 vehicles were recorded: more than half of these vehicles were driving faster than the 30mph speed limit with significant numbers exceeding 40 and even 50mph; 16 drivers went over 60mph and between 3pm and 7pm on 1st May a vehicle was driven over 70mph.
If you live in the Parish and would be interested in joining our road safety group could you please contact Christine at the Parish Centre.
CONSULTATION ON IMPROVEMENTS TO THE PLAY AREAS IN FRANCE LYNCH PLEASURE GROUNDS
The Parish Council in conjunction with parishioners are looking at raising money through grants to improve the play area in France Lynch Pleasure Ground.
Your views on this would be appreciated. Please click on the link below to access the survey.
In addition to a book swap at the Parish Centre, there are ‘satellite’ book swaps at adopted kiosks in the Parish. We have had so many comments from parishioners about how much they enjoy the two adopted kiosks/book swaps in Chalford Hill on Silver Street and France Lynch, that we would like to thank those involved in starting them up and keeping them going. The kiosk in Brownshill is shared use – a local history display and book swap. Please do not leave too many books at this kiosk, (if you have a great quantity please feel free to bring them to the Parish Centre and we will keep them here or distribute them further to the other kiosks).
We have a group of parishioners who have volunteered to visit elderly and housebound people in the Parish. If you would like an occasional visit, perhaps for a chat over a cup of tea or to share an interest, contact the Parish Centre and we will arrange for someone to call. (DBS checks are carried out on all our volunteers.) We would also like to hear from people with time on their hands who would be willing to visit.
COPPICE HILL CAR PARK
Councillors and employees carried out maintenance and tidying up of this area in August and what a difference it has made. Prior to the day, notices had been displayed in the area asking owners to move their vehicles to facilitate clearing. Unfortunately, some were not moved so it was not possible to clear the vegetation beneath them.
Footpath Working Group:
This highly successful and active group has its own webpage. Visit the Footpath Group page for information and pictures about the latest work. Call the Parish Office on 01453 887204 if you’re interested in joining this group.
MONTHLY PARISH COUNCIL ‘NEWSLETTER’: The monthly parish council ‘newsletter’ is included in the local publications – The Herald, Bussage, Brownshill & Eastcombe Newsletter and every 4 months in Valley News, the text for each month can be read here
ALLOTMENTS There are still a few available allotment plots at Middle Hill (and one or two at Browshill and France Lynch). If you wish to become a tenant please get in touch with the Clerks at The Parish Centre either by phone during opening hours on 01453 887204, or email firstname.lastname@example.org Allotment rents are incredibly reasonable, so growing your own is very economical, not to mention all the added benefits of fresh air, exercise and the company of friendly like-minded neighbours!
