France Lynch Pleasure Ground
France Lynch Pleasure Ground is situated between Chalford Hill and France Lynch. For small children there is a play area with swings and roundabout on the Burcombe Way side of the grounds, while the older children’s play area is on the France Lynch side, with slide, climbing frame and swings.
Hidden secrets of the Pleasure Ground -
We are leaving a small patch of the field (managed by ChalCAN) unmown to encourage wild flowers and grasses. This Pleasure Ground was once part of the old common, a large area of limestone grassland rich in flowers and grasses. Once widespread these grassland areas have all but disappeared from the Cotswolds.
Now excitingly, we have discovered that many of these wild flowers and grasses are surviving here in our Pleasure ground. We have identified 60 species - Rock Rose, Wild Thyme, Cowslip, Tormentil, Devil's-bit Scabious, Sheep's Fescue, Meadow Foxtail and many more. By leaving this small patch uncut we hope to allow many of them to thrive and set seed so that they continue to grow here for years to come.
The council has been able to make additions to the facilities in this pleasure ground in the last four years. The basketball and five-aside football pitch was installed in 2015. This was funded from the Active Together grants scheme from Gloucestershire County Council with the help of our County Councillor, Stan Waddington, and has proved to be very popular. In 2016 thanks to funding from the National Lottery’s Awards for All and a local developer (106 agreement) the parish council were able to purchase and install an adult outdoor exercise area.
The most recent addition, is a new play area which opened in July 2020. This project has been funded by Chalford Parish Council, Gloucestershire County Council Growing our Communities Fund, Stroud District Council, section 106 payment in respect of small developments, Broadband Action Group & National Lottery Awards for All. We are grateful to all for making this installation possible.
